MAKER-SPACE COMMUNITY MANAGER

● Do you get excited about hardware hacking, 3d printing and maker culture?
● Do you want to lead and grow the maker community in Myanmar?
● Do you have the skills to organize and promote events, meetups and workshops to support the development of the community?
Overview

Phandeeyar (“creation place”) is a tech hub that is helping to develop the technology and innovation ecosystem in Myanmar. Our mission is to use technology to accelerate change and development. We bring the tech community together with civil society, social enterprises and independent media to build the apps, tools and content that Myanmar needs. We have an awesome 6000 square foot space in the heart of downtown Yangon. We run a co-working area, classrooms, an event space and a busy program of activities. Last year we held 42 workshops, 36 Meetups, 21 seminars and 10 major events, including 3 hackathons a startup competition. In 2016 we launched many new exciting initiatives, including launching a startup accelerator, a tech entrepreneurship program and a Maker-space. The Maker-space is designed to be a place for Myanmar’s hardware hacking and maker community to come together to learn and share new skills, build stuff that solves real problems, work on hardware-related projects, and meet like minded people who are interested in using hardware technologies.

The Role

Phandeeyar is looking for a talented professional to serve as its Maker-space Community Manager. The Maker-space Manager will be responsible for developing and managing the day-to-day operations of Phandeeyar’s new Maker-space, as well as driving Phandeeyar’s hardware technology-related activities. Your job will be to help make Phandeeyar a vibrant center for the innovative and creative use of hardware technologies in Myanmar.

Key responsibilities include:

● Designing and running activities/programs to develop the Maker-space as a key community resource for the hardware tech ecosystem in Myanmar, including: seminars on hardware related topics, workshops for the community to learn new skills, and bigger events such as hackathons and maker fairs. Note: you will not be expected to teach at all of these events, but it is the responsibility of the Maker-space Community Manager to plan and execute them; this involves identifying the right people from our community to contribute to the Makerspace activities.
● Building the community of makers and hardware enthusiasts who are excited about using technology for civic impact
● In collaboration with the technical Makerspace staff, designing and managing training programs for the maker and hardware hacking community, including building a network of trainers
● Managing and running the day-to-day operations of the Makerspace, including: managing the full-time and part-time staff of the Makerspace, sourcing new equipment and supplies, designing a membership program for the Makerspace, and designing and documenting procedures and policies on how the equipment in the Makerspace should be used

Job Requirements

Essential Requirements

● Passion – Phandeeyar is trying to accelerate change and development in Myanmar. It works not just with the tech community, but with change agents such as civil society groups and social enterprises. You must be excited to use your skills to help those working on socially driven initiatives.

● Organizational skills – You are great at getting things done. You’re a self-starter who takes the initiative and can mobilize resources and solve problems. You can juggle multiple projects and you have good attention to detail.

● Communications – You’re a strong communicator with solid written and spoken Myanmar and good written and spoken English skills.

● Great people skills – You’re a people person. You love bringing people together and you have the interpersonal skills to help build and support the maker community and to connect it to the wider Myanmar society.

● Knowledge sharing – Desire to seek and pass on knowledge to others is a must. Previous teaching and mentoring experience is preferred.

● Technology knowledge – You don’t need to be a tech wiz, but it’s a bonus if you have had some exposure to hardware technologies – preferably electronics platforms and/or rapid prototyping techniques. Ideally you’d have at least a rudimentary understanding of what is happening in hardware technology right now. Some of the technologies that we work with in the Makerspace are: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, CAD/CAM software, PCB Design software, Linux, 3D printing, CNC routing
