Job Description

A Fantastic Opportunity for ...

TECHNOLOGY COMMUNITY MANAGER
● Are you an active member of the Myanmar tech community?
● Are excited to help grow Myanmar’s tech ecosystem?
● Do you want to use your skills to organize events, meetups and workshops to support the community?
THE OPPORTUNITY

With the opening up of Myanmar, connectivity has exploded. Tens of millions of people are already using smartphones and the country is poised for a digital leapfrog. Major international tech companies such as Uber, Grab and iFlix are already operating in the market and the local startup scene is thriving. Phandeeyar has been spearheading the development of Myanmar’s tech and innovation ecosystem since 2014. It is now looking for an energetic techie to expand its work training developers in Myanmar. If you’re passionate about supporting local developers then this is an unparalleled opportunity to have a big impact on the countyr’s tech ecosystem.

#ACCELERATEMM

Phandeeyar has been building the pool of tech talent and supporting the development of startups since 2014. In 2016 Phandeeyar launched Myanmar’s first-ever tech startup Accelerator. Cohort 1 graduated earlier this year and applications for Cohort 2 open in June. Phandeeyar also created a pre-accelerator program, the Yangon chapter of Silicon Valley’s Founder Institute. We also run the country’s biggest startup competition: StartUp Challenge. Phandeeyar is also building the developer community through MOOCs, workshops, meetups and other events, as well as supporting hardware hackers through its Makerspace.

The Role

Phandeeyar is looking for a talented professional to serve as its Technology Community Manager. The Technology Community Manager will be responsible for developing and managing the technology-related activities at Phandeeyar. Your job will be to help make Phandeeyar a vibrant center for the innovative and creative use of technology in Myanmar.

Key responsibilities include:

Designing and running activities/programs to support the development of the tech eco-system in Myanmar
Building the community of developers and designers who are excited about using technology for civic impact
Designing and managing training programs for the tech community, including building a network of trainers
Developing and running programs to identify and meet the technology needs of civil society organizations and independent media
Designing and managing activities such as hackathons, apps competitions and other similar events to bring the various communities together

Essential Requirements

Organizational skills – You are great at getting things done. You’re a self-starter who takes the initiative and can mobilize resources and solve problems. You can juggle multiple projects and you have good attention to detail.

Great people skills – You’re a people person. You love bringing people together and you have the interpersonal skills to help build and support the tech community and to connect it to the wider Myanmar society.

Passionate about technology – You don’t need to be a full stack engineer (although that would be ideal!), but you should be comfortable with technology and working with developers. Ideally you’d have a good broad understanding of what is happening in technology right now.

Communications – You’re a good communicator with solid written and spoken Myanmar and good written and spoken English skills.

Sectoral experience – Experience working in the tech sector is desirable. Experience working in or with NGOs/civil society and/or media would be a bonus.

The Details

● Location: This role is based in downtown Yangon. It will involve some travel around the country.
● Hours: Phandeeyar is a start-up community tech hub. As such, it does not have standard office hours (9am-5pm). You will need to work some evenings and weekends, however there is a “time off in lieu” policy.
● Remuneration: Will be based on experience and qualifications and will be competitive for the sector.
● To apply: Please send an email to jobs@phandeeyar.org explaining why you are perfect for this role and attach a CV/resume (not more than two pages long).
● Note: We welcome all applicants including those from the Myanmar diaspora.
