Job Description

A Fantastic Opportunity for ...

The Science Teacher is primarily responsible for creating and delivering a quality learning experience to each student, consistent with the unique culture, values, and standards of the school. 

 

Teachers at Thalun are dedicated to at least 180 days of contact time with the students under their care and obligated to 9 professional contract days. They are under the direct supervision of the School Director.

 

A full-time weekly teaching load typically consists of approximately 1000 contact minutes. Teachers are also expected to commit significant time to collaborative activities with their colleagues to develop, implement, and evaluate grade-level and school-wide plans related to teaching and learning. Teachers are expected to attend scheduled faculty meetings, curriculum planning sessions as well as department, grade- level and other meetings as dictated by professional obligations. Teachers also sponsor co-curricular and/ or after school activities as part of their contractual requirements. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

I. Planning Reflects Knowledge of Content, Pedagogy, and Students 

- Ensures that the curriculum addresses prescribed learning standards in a manner that supports the school’s mission, vision, and values. 

- Analyzes and uses data collected from formative, summative, and standardized assessments to identify student and instructional needs. 

- Delivers effective and comprehensive instruction that supports the curriculum with clear and detailed lesson plans that address the needs of each student. 

- Plans collaboratively and consistently with colleagues to ensure student mastery of the learning outcomes identified in the curriculum. 

II. Instructional Strategies 

- Designs and implements a range of instructional activities that are engaging, interactive, and effective in helping students achieve learning outcomes. 

- Draws upon a variety of resources, grouping strategies, and modalities to promote the learning of each student. 

- Establishes a culture of learning characterized by inquiry, multiple perspectives, risk-taking, and wonder. 

- Applies second language acquisition theory in lesson and unit design. 

- Introduces appropriate technology resources that support both content instruction and language acquisition. 

III. Classroom Management Skills 

- Creates a safe, welcoming, and low-stress environment conducive to learning. 

- Establishes a culture in which everyone learns. 

- Manages student behavior with compassion and fairness that is sensitive to individual needs and group dynamics and which is congruent with school policy and regulations. 

- Uses a repertoire of effective routines and procedures that create an organized and positive learning environment in which students increasingly become the managers of their own learning. 

IV. Assessment Practices 

- Uses a balanced program of developmentally appropriate formative and summative assessments to provide students and their parents clear feedback regarding student progress relative to articulated enduring understandings.

- Provides relevant, accurate, and understandable feedback to students in an ongoing and timely manner.

- Encourages student success through learning progressions and proficiency levels. 

- Uses a variety of instruments to assess both general and individual student progress and to adjust lesson plans and instruction accordingly. 


 

V. Collaboration and Communication 

- Embraces the educational vision of the school and articulates that vision in interactions with all 

constituencies. 

- Engages in positive dialogue and works collaboratively and productively with colleagues to enhance 

professional practice and promote student learning. 

- Maintains regular communication with parents and appropriate school personnel regarding student progress.

- Ensures that syllabus, unit plans, regularly updated course grades are available on the school’s official information system as an important part of communication with parents and students. 

- Aligns practice with school philosophy, policies, procedures and regulations. 

- Serves as a role model for students and others in the school community through personal deportment, professional dress, optimism and character. 

- Engages in ongoing professional development related to enhanced teaching and learning. 

VI. Other Responsibilities 

- Attends required staff meetings and serves, as appropriate, on school committees. 

- Participate in or sponsor school and student activities. 

- Observes school policies, requirements and procedures. 

- Supports the school and its leadership. 

 

D. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION 

Performance will be evaluated by the Director based on the above job description and in accordance with provisions in the School’s policy and the implementing regulations for that policy.
