MAIN (CORE) DUTIES

• Teach in a specialised classroom with a low student-to-teacher ratio

• Plan the timetable for the primary section of the specialist provision at MISY

• Ensure that the students’ needs as identified are met at all times

• Work alongside a general education teacher to assist a student who is in a general classroom

• Help develop and implement a student’s individualised education program (IEP)

• Assess children’s skill levels, academically and socially

• Adapt learning materials to students’ needs

• Monitor children’s behavioural patterns and arrange appropriate interventions if needed

• Find engaging activities to teach skills (e.g. drawing , music)

• Manage classroom crises and resolve conflict

• Prepare students for transition to the next phase of learning

• Perform regular testing and assessments

• Keep track of and reflect on students’ progress  

• Coordinate progress reports 

• Keep accurate records

• Provide one-on-one tutoring

• Apply a variety of special educational skills and techniques to reach students in different ways

• Teach and reinforce socially-acceptable behaviours

• Modify lesson plans to align with a student’s IEP

• Meet with parents to discuss how all parties involved can support the child

• Attend student IEP meetings and collaborate with parents

• Create a supportive and positive learning environment

• Attend professional development workshops and conferences

• Work with Special Education Coordinator to develop growth plans

• Use technology in the teaching and learning process

• Inform parents about their children’s performance as per the school policy regarding parental communication e.g. Engage, Class Dojo, Parent teacher meeting etc.

Requirements and skills

• Proven experience in the field of Special Education Needs

• Good knowledge of current special education topics and methodologies

• Experience working with children with a wide range of disabilities

• Ability to create IEPs

• A patient, resourceful, and resilient personality

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
