At the core a driver’s job is to get either people or goods and cargo from “A” to “B”. There is abundance of driving jobs available from taxi’s to private cars to busses all the way up to heavy machinery. It is not only the driver’s job to assure the delivery but also the safety and comfort of what it is they are transporting.
A good driver will be knowledgeable, know where they are going, be able to speak some of a second language and know how to obey road rules. For foreigners especially the thought of travelling long distances in Myanmar can be quite daunting, so to find someone they trust is a huge burden lifted.
In regards to transporting a company’s goods long distances, they are also wanting to know that their goods or cargo is in safe hands and will have a timely delivery.
A good driver may be hard to come by, so often when trust is gained regular work is more obtainable. A good driver will take responsibility for the vehicle, and not only ensure it cleanliness, but maintenance. Checking oil, water, batteries, breaks, tires is essential. A good driver also knows the procedures if an accident were to occur.
A small disadvantage to the job is that it may require long distances to be driven which can lead to extended time away from the family. But on the upside, it can create very flexible working conditions such as part time and contracts, which allows freedom.
As so most sectors of Myanmar grow, especially the tourism and construction industries, there is a growing need for drivers. A driver who can speak some English, has a clean driver’s license and is over the age of 25 can find themselves being a private driver for either tourists or a family of ex-pats which can be lucrative and steady work.
Not only that but it may provide the opportunity to see other parts of the country, often at the expense of the passengers when it has been negotiated.
For even further career advancement a driver could get experience in security, which would be an added asset in acquiring work.
