The Rakhine State in Myanmar is bordered by Chin State, Magway Division, Bago Division, and the Ayeyawady Division as well as the Bay Of Bengal to the west. The Arakan Mountains separate it from central Burma. The capital of Rakhine State is Sittwe. The main crop in Rakhine State is rice, and fishing is the major industry with most of the catch being transported to Yangon.
The Rakhine State like the rest of Myanmar has a very poor infrastructure, and is hard to get around. However there are a plans in place to build a port. It is called The Kyaukpyu Port Project. The port will create an overland link between Myanmar and Southern China, and will also mean that ships can avoid the Strait of Malacca with the result being that shipments travelling from China to India will save 5000km travelling distance. This project is bound to create jobs for people in the engineering/ technical function such as civil engineers and also for those in skilled trades/ construction.
Rakhine State is in a state of of ongoing conflict meaning that many NGO/ UN and NFP projects are located there, especially in the northern part of the state. These projects are entered around peacekeeping, education and healthcare.
