Cultivating Compassionate Leadership

In a new way forward, we need new leadership – need courageous leaders who have to be humble, and guided by a moral compass which is the combination of having a social purpose to contribute to society, said Halla Tómasdóttir, CEO of The B Team in a TED talk interview. In the past few months, the roles and responsibilities of business leaders have dramatically changed. Before the pandemic health crisis, most of the high-growth companies in Myanmar were focused on fostering innovation, driving revenue, and gaining market share. At the same time, they are navigating the health and safety concerns of their teams not only the physical concerns but also the psychological concerns, productivity in working remotely, and how to support their families through the pandemic. Display Compassion by Listening and Caring – The amount of time a leader spends talking to and listening to an employee is a sign of how important they are considered to the organization. That’s why the best leaders spend a lot of time walking around and chatting with their employees. So, during the stay at home period, how does a leader show his/her care to their team? Scheduling team warm-up or warp-up meetings for just half-hour once a day or once a week suffices to talk about what they have done, what are the team’s accomplishments for this week, what are their concerns for next week, etc. It shouldn’t forget to show appreciation which is a great way to recognize their efforts and contributions to the organization during the invisible time of each other.

Invest Time to Team – Time is among the most precious and scarce resources we have. Therefore, a leader doesn’t need to be burdened to build a strong relationship with his/her team by dedicating time and care. When you need the assistance of your team members, it will be better to start a conversation with a little chat in lieu of asking task assignments straightforward. It will certainly show that someone is a caring leader.
