There are many jobs in the hospitality and hotel industry in Myanmar as the tourism in industry is a burgeoning one. So much so, that the industry is having trouble keeping up the supply with the demand. Most of the jobs in hotels are located in the tourist “hot-spots” such as Yangon, Inle Lake and Mandalay, and these hotels vary in size, cost and services available. Hotels (especially large ones) have many different wheels that keep the machine running, and so jobs in hotels can be varied. There are a wide variety of jobs available in hotels, and like any business there are many different departments. There are customer facing roles such as receptionists, concierge, waiters, bartenders, chefs, and porters. Then, depending on the services offered by a particular establishment there may be hotel jobs in hair, nails and beauty, jobs for gym instructors, and jobs in childcare. Behind the scenes, hotels require a lot of upkeep, and there are jobs in hotels such as cleaners, engineers, maintenance staff, and kitchen hands, cellar managers and security who do this. Other jobs in the hospitality and hotel industry include reservation managers, sales executives, HR Managers and accountants.
There are an increasing amount of opportunities in hospitality and hotels in Myanmar as the tourism industry continues to thrive. Did you know that from 2014 to 2015 the total number hotel rooms in Myanmar increased by 15.5%. This has created a lot of job opportunities in hotels, especially in the tourist hotspots such as Ngapali Beach in the Rakine State, Inle Lake, Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyitaw. Due to the country intentions to open up, a lot of large chain hotels are setting up, which creates many jobs. To get a job in the hospitality and hotel industry really depends on what your speciality is. For example there are customer facing roles such as receptionists, food and beverage attendants, porters, fitness instructors, drivers, and security. All of these roles do not necessarily require tertiary education, but a command of the English Language is essential (some hotels do provide English classes for their employees also). There are also roles that do not require fluency in the English language as there is not much interaction with the guests such as kitchen hands, chambermaids, and gardeners, and maintenance staff. As well as the people providing the aforementioned services, there are also a multitude of skilled jobs which run the hotel. For example accounting and finance, human resources and marketing. For these roles tertiary education is required.
