Jobs in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry in Myanmar are involved with the invention, creation, production and selling of medicines and health care products. Essentially, the difference between them is that the jobs in the pharmaceutical industry focus on medicines made of various chemical components, whereas the biotechnology medications have a biological basis. Adding to this, the pharmaceutical industry focuses on medicines whereas the biotechnology side also makes products involved in agriculture, food production and fuel. The types of jobs one may find in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals may be on the creation side such as biologists and chemical engineers, or they may be on the other side involved in the advertising, marketing, sales and distribution side of medications. Jobs in pharmaceutical sales may involve building relationships with hospitals and doctors who will prescribe the product to their patients. To get a job in sales in the pharmaceutical industry one needs to be target driven as well as well presented and have excellent communication skills. Also on the sales side of things is working in a pharmacy where knowledge is required as not only will one be handing out prescription drugs, but also providing advice to individuals and selling non prescription drugs. Pharmaceutical drugs may be used for a number of things, such as cure diseases or infections, pain prevention or for health purposes such as vitamin supplements. The industry is a very large one, and there are many job opportunities available especially in Yangon and Mandalay where approximately 60% of drug sales in Myanmar take place.
Historically, the people of Myanmar have not had sufficient access to medicine. However, with the apparent emerging of a middle class, individuals have a higher disposable income as well as access to all different types of medications such as drugs, medicines, tonics and injections which may be needed for treatment or health improvement. Saying that, the pharma industry in Myanmar itself is far from developed, and most drugs (which need to be FDA approved) come from neighbouring countries such as India. Thus jobs in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals in Myanmar as of 2017 (it is only a matter of time before manufacturing starts taking place) are mostly in the import, distribution and sales of drugs. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, like other companies need Human Resource managers for the attraction and retention of employees, they need IT specialists to facilitate internal and external communication systems and of course they need an accounting department and senior accountants to oversee the finances and monitor the cash flow. Sales is a very large part of the pharmaceutical industry as even though there are generic drugs these are often branded by a particular company and it is the jobs of the sales executive to “sell” their product. Whether it be to a hospital or a drugstore. Those working in sales need to have a good command of English, be well presented, have knowledge of the product that they are selling and know the benefits and side effects. Sales is highly target driven, but once proven a sales manager may go on to be a regional manager or even a national manager. Sales representatives do not necessarily need to be degree educated, but experience is key: most training takes place on the job. To work in a pharmacy, a college degree is normally required as not only is one handing out prescriptions, but also prescribing for ailments themselves.
