The job of recruitment and employment agencies in Myanmar is to work on behalf of companies to attract and screen prospective employees for a position, and then offer their client shortlisted candidates. Recruitment and employment agencies work in various capacities across all industries. Whether it be unskilled labourers or a CEO for a multinational they are searching for, it is the job of the recruitment agency to follow the brief and source the best candidates possible. Positions that the recruitment agency fills may be temporary, contract or permeant, but effectively recruitment and employment agencies work in sales, the product being human capital. On a day to day basis, an employee in a recruitment agency could be working with a number of different clients. Or they may be sourcing clients: in recruitment and employment agencies part of the job is to cold call and seek clients depending on the speciality of the employment agency, and if a company is looking for an employee they may be working with a number of recruitment agencies simultaneously, unless they have an exclusive service agreement making the industry quite competitive. It is the job of the recruitment agency to meet with their client and ascertain what exactly they are looking for: what skills, attributes and education is essential for the prospective candidates. The recruitment or employment agency will then use various methods to attract the candidates such as advertising on portals such as JobNet. They will then scour the resumes and interview the candidates, ideally providing a short list to their client within the given timeframe. If the client accepts the candidate, then a fee will be paid to the recruitment or employment agency, normally after a requisite trial period is completed. Employment agencies and recruitment agencies providing temporary and contract staff have a slightly different system, whereby technically they are the employer of the worker. Not only do they pay the workers, but if anything goes wrong then that falls on the recruitment agency, and they must handle the problem. That makes it quite a stressful occupation as there are so many things that can go wrong on a daily basis, and the jobs in recruitment and employment agencies are quite target driven, which contributes to high stress. But worth it when you find the right candidate for the right job.
Across all sectors, there is often a need to utilise an employment or recruitment agencies as not only does it save on legwork, but recruitment and employment agencies will often have a database at their fingertips, cutting down the search process. Often, companies will have an in house recruitment department, but in many cases they will also work with a recruitment or employment agency, especially for the specialised roles. Recruitment agencies can be seen as a paradigm of HR, and many recruitment and employment consultants will come from a human resources background. Coming from a sales background is also quite normal as there are many of the same attributes involved, such as fast thinking, ability to multitask, excellent communication skills and being able to work well under pressure. At an executive search level in recruitment and employment agencies, many of the consultants will come from the background of their specified industry as not only do they know the roles inside out, but through their time working in the industry they have built up a network, and when someone in their network is looking for new opportunities it is likely that they will call a consultant that they are familiar with. Working in recruitment and employment agencies can be quite lucrative, especially when working in a specialised executive field.
