Jobs in food and beverage and catering industry in Myanmar are in abundance, and that will continue to rise as the hospitality and hotels industry continues to grow. But food and beverage jobs are not just related to the movement of food and drink at restaurant or bar level but on a much larger scale. There are jobs in food and beverage on a restaurant or hotel level. Jobs such as chefs, hostesses, waiters, shift managers, and bartenders. These jobs may be located local restaurants, international hotels or bars, and involve the preparation and service of food and drinks. However, a waiter delivering a dish or a cocktail to a table is the last step in a very long process. Jobs in food and beverage also involve the sourcing of ingredients (for both food and beverages). This may from going to the market, ordering from suppliers locally or nationally (which involves logistics and transport) or even internationally. For example in Yangon there are so many specialised, higher end restaurants setting up, and often they require both international food and ingredients (creating jobs in import and export). Adding to this there seems to be a trend taking place in other methods of delivery, creating jobs in catering and delivery. Caterers are used for specific events or functions and do not take place in a restaurant, but more in the home or office. Delivery services such as Yangon door2door also provide delivery to one’s home from a variety of different restaurants. Jobs in this food and beverage delivery include drivers, call centre operators, marketing professionals, and this working from a sales perspective.
The food and beverage and catering industry is a large one that encapsulated basically anything relating to the production, transport, delivery and sale of food and drink, whether it be selling the products or serving them. This is both small scale and large scale. There are jobs in food and beverage and catering which require a lot of interaction with customers, such as servers, hosts, bartenders and shift supervisors. these jobs require an excellent standard of English as well as a friendly and communicative demeanour. There is also a lot of customer interactions for alcohol representatives. Lately in Myanmar there seems to be more encouragement in competition for the consumer dollar, and thus brands are being promoted. This involves job opportunities in marketing, sales and graphic design. There are also unskilled jobs available in factories and warehouses such as packaging and logistics and transport. There are also jobs for technicians. For example, Carlsberg has a brewery in Myanmar, and many establishments offers Carlsberg on tap, which creates a requirement for such technicians.
