The function of design and architecture throughout Myanmar is to design and construct buildings which are aesthetically pleasing and blend into the surroundings whilst taking into consideration safety and engineering/ technical standards. Projects come in a multitude of sizes and budgets. Whether it be a small house or a multi-story office block there are many aspects to each project, and many stakeholders involved. An architect manages a project from the inception to the design to coordinating the construction and the skilled trades and construction workers. An architect has a uniques skill set as not only must their communication be supreme, but the must be able to simultaneously be able to think creatively and logically. They must be superior project managers as there are so many aspects to coordinate and oversee. On any given day an architect could be meeting with clients, visiting various sites, working with a drafter who’s job it is to convert the architect’s designs into technical drawings, or wearing their marketing manager’s hat to promote their products and designs. An architect may also be working on any number of projects at any given time. Design and architecture is a highly rewarding career, as not only can it be lucrative, but it provides diversity (at the same time an architect may be working on a new hotel in Ngwe Saung in the Ayeyawady Division and a colonial project in downtown Yangon). It also allows a certain amount of flexibility, as once an architect has established themselves they may find themselves being able to pick and choose projects.
Myanmar is going through a time of unprecedented growth, and with so much foreign investment coming in, architects are in high demand. To become an architect a degree is required, but the most essential experience to gain is the practical, which is done through traineeships and working in a large firm underneath a mentor. It is likely that an aspiring architect will have other architects of certain styles that will have inspired them. For an architect with a love of colonialism, Myanmar (especially Yangon) is a particularly exciting place. There are many qualities and competencies required to be a good architect. Naturally there is the combination of 3D, mathematical, analytical and creative thinking, but communication is key. There are so many stakeholders at any one time that an architect is communicating/ collaborating with. First and foremost is the client. A good architect needs to establish a relationship of mutual respect and trust with their client by listening to their specifications, seeing their vision and then bringing it to life in within budget. They also need to utilise their communication skills from a management perspective in order to guide people so that all the pieces fall into place. A good architect with a proven record will not only be sought after, but often pursued by clients for their expertise, especially when they have a niche. An architect relies heavily on their reputation, but once this has been cultivated there are many options, whether it be working in a firm, working in a freelance capacity or starting their own firm. It also allows for locational flexibility.
