The function of quality assurance in Myanmar and throughout the world is to assure the quality, safety and consistency of products and services. Quality assurance permeates all industries, and is not just limited to manufacturing, but can be applied to any business activity such as design, computer software development, transportation, education, banking, insurance, and retailing to name a few. The function of quality assurance is to develop consistent standards and processes both company and industry wide to enhance consistency throughout the whole process. Those working in quality assurance may also be referred to as testers, inspectors or samplers and they are imperative to the entire production process, and their job is satisfying customer requirements, complying with regulations and meeting environmental objectives. Depending on the industry, and the product or service involved there will be a different set of processes, but quality assurance falls into two categories. Quality control which takes place in the earlier stages which is testing the products and finding defects, and then quality assurance which promotes good practice and improves on production standards to promote consistency. Someone in quality assurance may be looking for scratches, or doing failure testing, for example putting a product under stress such as humidity which may expose weaknesses, and it is the job of quality assurance to improve the product. Some examples of industries where quality insurance is vital are aerospace (it is one of the three project functions as one single failure of a part can be an epic catastrophe), software development (which monitors the software engineering processes), consulting (often quality assurance professionals will be called in when introducing new quality practices and methods) and the medical industry (establishing standards of medical equipment and services, including the introduction of new medicines and electrical devices).
The ISO is an international standard of quality assurance which specifies general requirements, Economically, Myanmar is moving forward at an incredibly fast rate, and there is an abundance of opportunities in quality assurance as not only are international companies setting up here, but there are higher levels of competition that there were previously absent. This means that consumers can shop around for quality products. One small failure in any product or service can erode the level of trust. Jobs in quality assurance are dependant on the industry, but quality insurance employees all need to have strong analytical skills, an eye for detail, an ability to communicate, be adept in solving problems, and have excellent computer skills as at all stages in quality assurance glitches, safety issues and flaws need to be well documented and reported. In the manufacturing industry, to acquire a job in quality assurance does not necessarily require a degree, but the aforementioned qualities. In other areas of quality assurance such as food manufacturing a food science degree is useful. To work in a corporate quality assurance, for example in auditing, a relevant degree in accounting or and MBA is normally required. However, from there one can move into a project management role. There are also many administrative functions in quality assurance, and even though some of these do not require a formal education they provide exposure to the machinations of the company or industry meaning that progression into another role such as in human resources is achievable.
