Jobs in strategy and planning are involved in the process in an organisation of setting goals, determining how to reach these goals, mobilising resources and executing the actions. The vital strategy and planning function is not just used in all businesses whether they be small, large, private or government but also it is used within the businesses at all different departments and levels. One may even say that strategy is used in individual lives. At an organisational level, jobs in strategy and planning are an organisational management activity which is used to determine priorities, focus energies and resources, strengthen overall operations and make absolutely certain that employees and stakeholders are working towards common goals. Jobs in strategy and planning include titles such as corporate planner and chief strategy and training officer. There is a sequence involved in strategy and planning and it begins with gathering information and communicating amongst the relevant parties to develop a common understanding. Questions involved in this initial stage are what are the interests of the business? What do our customers value? and what differentiates us as a business form our competitors? It is basically an analysis and assessment determining where you stand. The next step is determining where you where you want to be (realistically, whilst taking into consideration the company environment, the external environment and the competencies of the organisation. From there it is the job of those working in strategy and planning to communicate how the strategy should be implemented, and the plan may cover a number of years (naturally with periodical assessments). One of the main purposes of the plan is to guide leaders in the decision making process moving forward. All in all it is about working out where you stand, where you want to be and how you are going to get there. Naturally, to be good in strategy and planning an abundance of experience is required in the relevant industry, as well as a college education, most likely up to a masters level, and ability to see the big picture as well as the smaller pictures within that make up the whole. For example, some of the jobs of a chief strategy officer are directing business units on implementing policies and procedures and creating a strategic agenda for the department, recommending criteria and systems for evaluating effectiveness if existing programs and new programs, driving decision making that creates medium and long term improvement, and creating effective mechanisms for improvement. It is possible to work your way up to a role in strategy and planning, for example a human resources manager will have input into strategy and planning of the company from a human capital perspective, and after much experience may move to a director role or even into corporate planning. To say that those working in strategy and planning require a unique skill set is quite the understatement. Not only do they need to be logical and strategic thinkers, but they need to have an understanding of all aspects of the business and its units and they must be able to identify all sorts of problems and solve them. At the same time those working in strategy and planning are the central nervous system for stakeholders. It is the job of those in strategy and planning to communicate and implement the strategy both internally and externally so that all stakeholders (including employees, partners and suppliers) understand how the strategy carries out the companies overall goals. Communication is key. Strategy and planning specialists may be hired externally in a company, or they may work on a project basis or in a consulting capacity.
