Jobs in trading, jobs in import, and jobs in export and jobs in trading all involve the selling or buying and transporting of goods between countries and getting them into the hands of the consumer. . These countries may be neighbours such as Thailand, India and China, or they may be further afar. The whole process of getting goods from the manufacturer to the consumer requires careful planning, and it is the job of those in trading, distribution import and export to cover all logistical and transportation aspects. The transportation of goods is most commonly by land and sea. Once the goods arrive at their destination (normally a strategically placed warehouse) it s the job of distribution to get the goods from there to the consumer. There are a multitude of jobs in the trading, distribution, import and export industry. Starting with manufacturing process one may find jobs such as quality assurance and operating machinery. From there, the goods are transported through various means, but there is a lot of manual labour involved in this. When the goods arrive at their destination, the delivery must be checked to assure the contents are correct, and then distributed further. Whether it be to shops, supermarkets, factories or individuals. This whole process requires impeccable organisation, and a plethora of administration as the goods must always be tracked and accounted for. This provides job opportunities for those ini administrative functions. Some examples of jobs in trading, distribution, import and export are import and export staff, operations staff, shipping staff, container inspectors, business development managers, logistics managers, channel distribution managers and sales executives to name a few.
Myanmar is going through a multitude of reforms to enhance the economy, and the trading, distribution, import and export industry is the recipient of some of those reforms. For example, the Myanmar Government recently revised legislation to encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by granting a five year tax exemption on custom duties and approved exported goods in Special Economic Zones (SEZ’s). SEZ’s in Myanmar are located in Dawei, Kyaukphyu, and Thilawa which are all port projects. For example, the Kyaukphyu will effectively create an overland link between Myanmar and Southern China which means that ships can avoid the Strait of Malacca and 5000n worth of travel. This will make transporting goods between India and China much more efficient. However, the infrastructure in Myanmar (especially on the roads) is still not quite up to standard and there are many infrastructure projects underway which will improve the roads and effectively streamline import and export efficiency between Myanmar and its neighbours. Requirements to get a job in trading, distribution, import and export is really dependant on the role one is seeking. For example, throughout the whole process of transporting goods, a lot of manual labour and machine operation is required, as well as drivers. These jobs do not require any formal education, just a certain level of fitness and no aversions to extreme weather! There are also a multitude of administration roles involved in the “shipping of goods” (which does not necessarily imply by sea) such as data entry, stock controllers, quality control, and sales administration. These roles do not necessarily require a college education, but a command on the english language and sound computer skills are normally a must. Progression from here can be into a management function. Roles in channel distribution management, logistics coordination, accounting and finance, human resource management and business development managers all require a formal education, preferably in business.
