The function of doctor/ nursing/ medical in Myanmar is to provide health care services to individuals, families and communities, not just in urban centres such as Mandalay but also in other divisions such as Thaninthayi Division in both cities and rural areas. It is the function of medical/ doctors/ nurses to not only diagnose and tend to those that are sick or injured, but to provide advice and support to patients and families. The term medical/ doctor/ nursing encapsulates such a large variety of health care, but from the time one is born until the end of their life they will need to see a doctor for various different elements. What doctors and nurses do on a day to day basis is so vary varied. But we have also seen television shows based in hospitals, and these shows have enough material to stay on the air for years. On any given day a doctor could be dealing with any given number of patients and their ailments can vary from a broken thumb to a life threatening illness to car accident victims. It is also doctors job to diagnose and treat the patients accurately. A doctor may have to medicate the patients, in which case they work with those in pharmaceuticals/ life sciences industry. Medical/ doctor/ nursing professions are highly stressful. Even though they are often lucrative occupations, and highly respected the hours can be long and some experiences traumatic. To be good at their job, all in this profession must be able to time manage, be exceptional under stress and be constantly learning and keeping up with current procedures. They also need to have excellent communication skills as they are not only communicating with colleagues, but patients and the patients families and the news is not always good.
Myanmar is going through accelerated growth at the moment, over many industries and the medical/ doctor/ nursing function is no exception. They are also now open to foreign investment, which means that such care in Myanmar will become available. With more health care available, more medical/ doctors and nursing will be required. Hopefully this will lead more training, more hospitals and more resources, not only in urban centres such as Yangon, but throughout all of the regions and divisions as at the moment the healthcare in Myanmar is below standard. To become a medical professional takes training. For a doctor many years of training is required. After a doctor has achieved their degree they will do an internship, either locally or abroad. Following this, they may choose to specialise, for example in cardiology, radiology, oncology or infectious diseases. A doctor is always learning on the job, as is a nurse. Saying that, not all jobs in the medical/ doctor/ nursing function are doctors or nurses. Medical/ hospital is an industry in itself, and there are also highly administrative functions in a hospital and requirements for a variety of professionals. For example, there is an accounting/ finance department as well as a need for receptionists, human resources admin, managers and so forth.
