The term “repat” comes from the latin term “repatriare” meaning to return to one’s country, which many Myanmar nationals have done since 2011 when the country opened up internationally. It is not known exactly how many Myanmar nationals are living abroad (some estimate approximately 5 million), but they are dispersed across many lands, primarily in other ASEAN countries, Australia, United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. Jobs for Myanmar returnees are in abundance as they are lucky enough to straddle two cultures, and normally able to speak both Burmese and English perfectly. Rapat jobs in Myanmar go across all sectors, and companies definitely love repats as they are the ones possessing the unique ability to bridge the cultural gaps that exist in the current business and cultural environments in Myanmar. Myanmar nationals return for a variety of different reasons, but many site the main motivation as a desire to rebuild their home country. Even though there are more than sufficient jobs for Myanmar nationals living abroad that provide great management growth opportunities, it can often be a culture shock for both the repats and the locals who never left as in essence repats are simultaneously foreign and local. International jobs in Myanmar, and jobs for repats are especially rife in banking, finance and management consulting, however the salaries offered in Myanmar are somewhat lower, so repats may find that they need to lower their expectations. Many repats have also returned and forged careers as entrepreneurs.
it is considered common knowledge that Myanmar is going through a multitude of changes as it transitions into a democratic society, especially economically and culturally. At times the convergence of two cultures, especially in the workplace can be somewhat delicate. This is one of the reasons why repats are considered such a valuable resource: they have the international experience combined with a fluency in both languages as well as an understanding of the different cultures. Types of jobs for Myanmar returnees include those in NGO’s and non-profit, consulting in various sectors, banking and finance, IT, and accounting to name a few. Many repats have also returned and begun start up companies. Another hugely popular choice for repats is to open high end restaurants, especially in Yangon. These are sometimes western style restaurants or traditional Burmese restaurants adopting western methods. For repats who choose to return “home” their opportunities are somewhat limitless.
