One of the main objectives of education/ teaching jobs and childcare in Myanmar is to educate people of all different ages in an array of different subjects to help them learn. Whether it be in a public school, a volunteer school, a Monastic school or a private college, different methods must be adopted such as lecturing or role playing in order to facilitate the transfer of information. When children are younger they will often have the same teacher for all of their subjects and the focus is on assisting the cognitive and emotional development of the child. As students get older, they are taught individual subjects such as math, history, english or science based subjects. As this is more knowledge based, teachers with specific knowledge are required. Regardless of the age of the student, it is imperative for teachers to have excellent communication skills. A teacher will still have many administrative duties outside of school hours, such as marking papers and developing lesson plans. In some cases teachers will be provided with a curriculum for the semester or the year, or they may have free reign to develop their own program.
As Myanmar opens up politically, socially and economically there are an abundance of teaching opportunities at all levels of education. To become a teacher, qualifications are generally required, preferably a degree in education, but as there is such a high demand for teachers, many institutions will accept any degree and/ or an internationally recognised qualification such as TEFL. But most important is the desire to teach and an ability to communicate in such a way that people learn. When formal qualifications have not been obtained, volunteering is always a wonderful way to gain experience, whether it be in an urban centre such as Yangon or in a rural village. Efforts are always appreciated. Another avenue is as a teacher’s assistant which provides exposure and experience. A qualified teacher with experience may work in government, private or religious institutions; skills are transferrable within them. A teacher who has been in rural Myanmar working in a government school may crave the urban life and choose to move to larger cities such as Yangon and work in an international school where the wages tend to be higher. Another viable option that a teacher has is to tutor students or provide English classess outside standard working hours or as a freelancer.
