The kind of jobs to be found in internet services in Myanmar are vast, especially in urban centres such as Yangon. Between the main ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) competition is quite intense, so the need for skilled employees across all areas is increasingly important for companies such as Ooredoo, Telenor and MTP. Careers at Ooredoo such as business development, marketing, sales, and customer service are some of the most frequently advertised jobs in internet services as companies are wanting to attract and retain loyal customers. Some examples of jobs that are front of line in internet services include: technicians who connect people or companies to the internet using either fibre optics, satellite and copper wire (technicians may also be called out for maintenance and repairs), customer service who handle any complaints or queries (either in a shop or in a call centre), and shift supervisors who oversee the staff in an internet services shops. Sales also plays a very large part, and whether it is selling to individuals, families, or companies, sales executives and managers need to be able to speak English as well as having excellent communication skills and be target driven. But to even get leads for the sales executives, a good marketing campaign is required in order to get the attention of the consumer. These marketing campaigns could be promotions or offers which entice the customer. A good social media manager is also required, as people access most of their information from their phones, and it is likely that social media sites such as Facebook have the greatest reach. All of the above jobs are just examples of jobs in internet services, and are ISP related. Internet services as a general term goes a lot further as recently banks have started providing internet banking, and credit card online payments are slowly becoming more common, meaning there will be more creation of jobs that are related to online services.
Myanmar is going through a period of rapid economic growth, and some may say “trying to catch up to the rest of the world”, but in the case of internet this could not be more true. Whilst most of the world is using internet for basically everything (online banking, news, movies, emailing and so forth) it is only in recent years that the general population of Myanmar has gained access to the internet. As of 2017, there were three main internet service providers (ISPs) competing: Ooredoo, Telenor and MPT. The competition between these three companies has become somewhat intense, meaning there are an abundance of job opportunities. To get a job in internet services depends on what you are looking for. To work in a provider's shop, sound product knowledge, a command of the English language as well as good communication skills are very important as customers have the ability to shop around. To be able to not only sell the product, but solve any problems the customers may have is key. To work in the call centre providing customer service, a good phone manner as well as patience in understanding the customers concerns are essential. Either of these roles are obtainable without a degree and they can also provide flexibility in hours meaning that other interests such as study can be undertaken in the meantime. A sales executive working in internet services may be working with individuals, families, companies and even mobile users. Even though sales roles do not necessarily require a degree, one working as a sales executive must be highly driven by targets, and have extensive product knowledge in order to meet those targets, To work in marketing, and create those campaigns which grab the attention of the consumer, a degree is required. As a marketing manager in internet services, social media is especially important as now that people are using the internet… There are many more of corporate jobs in the internet services industry, and this is not going to decrease as the competition increases.
