Computer systems have two major elements: the hardware and the software. Hardware is the parts that you can physically touch, for example the monitor, mouse, keypad, printer, and the hard drive. Jobs in hardware include anything to do with the design, production, transportation, installation and maintenance (to begin with). Software on the other hand is the collection of code and instructions installed on the hard drive of a computer which are basically instructions for the computer to complete specific operations. Some examples of software are internet browsers (such as firefox and chrome), movie player (VLC), operating systems (such as Android, iOS, Mac OS, Windows), and photo and graphic software (such as Adobe and Photoshop) but this is just to start. The types of jobs in software in Myanmar are really quite limitless, and depend on sector, industry and function. Jobs in software may fall into the design and creation category such as general web developers, Java developers, and Android developers, or they may be in the maintenance and functioning of the software such as IT assistants, and then there are roles in the usage of the software such as graphic designers, Autocad Engineers, and office assistants and all other employees using computers on a day to day basis. Examples of hardware jobs may include roles such as network engineer, electrical engineer and sales. Many roles in the IT department of any given company will involve the maintenance and functioning of both the hardware and software aspects, such as IT assistants, network assistants, and IT managers to name a few. Working in hardware and software in Myanmar may be considered a very smart choice as it is an industry that is only going to continue to grow.
IT and technology in Myanmar are thriving, to say the least. It is only in recent years that Myanmar gained wide access to the internet, but now computers, hardware and software are basically an integral part to the functioning of any business, large or small. There is really no limit to the scope of jobs in hardware and software, one simply needs to do a search on portals such as JobNet to see how many opportunities there are across various functions, sectors and industries. To obtain a job in hardware and/ or software really depends on what one is seeking. For some roles (such as software developer, software engineer, IT Manager) a degree is normally required. However, as the industry is moving so very fast, real world experience and some vocational training seem to go a long way. For many roles such as Android developers and Java developers there are ways to complement their education with resources such as online tutorials and message boards. To work in the sales of hardware and software normally requires a command of the English language, and an ability to identify the customer’s needs in order to provide solutions that suit their budget. Whilst a degree is not necessarily required for sales, an ability to communicate and be able to work under pressure is. Whilst jobs in hardware and software are incredibly varied, there is one underlying theme for all professionals, and that is that they need to constantly stay abreast with any developments in the industry.
