The function of legal in Myanmar is to represent the interests of their clients (regardless of the industry, whether be individuals or companies) in legal negotiations with partners, customers, suppliers, and government/ regulatory authorities. The need for legal assistance spans across all functions and industries, from entertainment to accounting/ audit/ tax services. On a corporate level, legal partners with business and functional teams to support growth, implement business plans and facilitate strategic projects as well as providing advice on aspects of the law. A lawyer will provide advice on all aspect of the law, for example risk management, intellectual property, leasing, licensing, corporate compliance, foreign investment, liability or labour and employment. On a day to day basis, depending on the lawyers particular role, they may be drafting correspondence, managing and settling disputes, negotiating contracts, providing advice, training stakeholders on legislation, or actually being in court. The exact role of a lawyer will vary depending the experience and industry. However, regardless of their exact function, a lawyer always needs to be up to date on rules and regulations on both a local and international level in order to provide that sound advice. Working in the legal profession is a well paid job (even at an administrative level) but the hours can be very long, and at times the work stressful.
Myanmar is going through an abundance of significant advancements, and n all sectors there is a requirement for various types of lawyers and legal professionals. To become a lawyer in the first place, one need a tertiary education followed by an internship. To eve work as a paralegal a degree is normally required. During the later years of their studies, a lawyer will tend to lean towards a speciality, and will then most likely choose an internship aligned to their speciality, some examples being corporate law, employment law, international law or even property law in the real estate/ property development industry. A good lawyer pays strong attention to detail, is thorough, highly knowledgeable, fast liking and articulate (and can naturally speak very good English). These skills are all highly transferrable, and a good lawyer has many career options for progression. For example, a lawyer specialising in contract law may move easily from a government role to an in house role in an international corporation such as one in the banking/ financial services/ investments industry. What is key is that the lawyer is always looking out for their client, and offers sound advice and guidance. Whilst lawyers sometimes work in house, they may also work in a legal firm. Another option that qualified and experienced lawyers is to work in a consulting capacity.
