In Myanmar the function of project management is to manage a project from its’ inception to completion. There are many steps in this process. The project needs to be planned, a sequence organised to execute the plan, a schedule made, an estimated time and cost analysed, a budget developed, any risks associated need to be assessed, a team gathered, and the plan executed. All the while the KPI’s need to be met and stakeholders informed of the ongoing progress. Which is why any project needs an excellent project manager at the helm. A project is a set task, and is set within a limited timeframe, and sometimes the team undertaking the project is hired internally in the company or corporation or externally. Project management is common and popular in all industries. For example in accounting and finance, companies or corporations will need an internal audit done by an external source, and they will recruit a project manager externally (from a firm specialising in this such as KPMG) and then the auditors will bring in a team, develop a sequence and complete the project in the given time frame. It makes a lot of sense as not only does it provide objectivity, but there is not a requirement for an auditing team the remainder of the time They will come in, complete the project and then business as usual. Another industry which project management is particularly popular is in construction. Take for example all the infrastructure projects that are taking place in Central Myanmar, especially around Bagan on the roads: these are all projects, where a skilled project management team most likely from an engineering background has been brought in to develop and execute a project within a given budget and timeframe.
Given the unprecedented economic growth that Myanmar is currently experiencing, there is really no limit for career advancement across the sectors. A project manager is normally degree educated in the relevant feel as an abundance of knowledge is essential. However, an experienced project manager can move around industries as much of the role is processes, and a good project manager can recruit the right team with the required expertise to assist. The beauty of project management is that is is flexible, both because there is a set time and project work is available in many locations. A project team member after proving themselves may want to move to a project manager role, which requires a unique skill set. Not only do they lead a team (which has human resources aspects) but they need to have excellent communication skills as they are in constant contact with all stakeholders involved in the project (from the suppliers to investors). They also need to have analytical minds, a problem solving ability and be able to think quickly. A project manager may choose to move to a full managerial role (and many opportunities would arise as a project manager interacts with a lot of different people) or may choose to keep on managing projects increasing the scope of them, as projects come in every size.
