Advertising, PR and marketing jobs are somewhat different as there are different objectives involved, but ultimately they are all intertwined and tend to be be conflated as they are all responsible for communicating prospective customers. The job of marketing is to promote the company and its products or service through various strategies and channels with the goal of creating attention and drawing in the consumer’s interest, ultimately leading to a sale. The bottom line is the bottom line, and the job of marketing it to get sales. The job of advertising is a strategy of marketing, and advertising involves purchasing a space in a magazine, blog or billboard and in that space the company pays for the add they have designed. Public Relations jobs have an overlap with both marketing and advertising. Both PR and marketing jobs involve driving awareness and building brand reputations, but Public Relations focuses more on cultivating the long term reputation of the brand through communication with stakeholders and cultivating professional relationships. Similarly there is an overlap between the jobs of PR and advertising. Where advertising pays for a certain space and has total control over the advertisement, the job of PR is to not pay for it but have a reputable source mention or promote the product which relinquishes control of the content of the story and how the product is displayed. Take for example a band of watch. The watch company may take out say, a page in a magazine with a handsome watch model, and some well crafted words, which may attract customers creating revenue. But say that the same watch is mentioned in a reputable magazine as the “must have fashion accessory”: this would also create revenue, perhaps even more, but the advertising is not paid for. The lines between advertising, PR and marketing have always been somewhat blurred, but increasingly so in recent years with the new communication tools available, such as online magazines, blogs and social media such as Instagram and Pinterest. Managing these platforms could be the job of either or all the disciplines.
In recent times Myanmar has begun making reforms across political, economical and social spheres which have opened up channels for international trade. Perhaps one of the results from this seems to be an emerging middle class with a higher disposable incomes, and there is much competition from companies to acquire part of this new found revenue, which is where advertising, PR and marketing all come in. To acquire a job in marketing normally requires a related degree, and when starting out a marketing assistant may find themselves managing social media, telemarketing, administrative duties or taking part in a campaign. From there it is dependent on the industry one is working in and the size of the company. It is a similar situation for both advertising and PR, but PR at entry level may have the job of helping organise events or writing draft press releases. Advertising, PR and marketing jobs may all be located within a company, or they may be in a specialist agency. Jobs involved in all three processes include creative roles such as content writing, and graphic design. As mentioned above, advertising, PR and marketing are somewhat intertwined, allowing for movement between the three (for example someone in marketing may move into PR). Some people also specialise in more than one of the functions (such as PR and marketing).
