7 Chemicals, Petro-Chemicals Jobs Found
Sort by
Jobs in chemicals and petrochemicals involve the extracting, transporting, transforming and selling of chemicals mostly derived from petroleum. Some chemical compounds made from petroleum are also obtained from other fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas. Chemicals and petrochemicals are made on a very large scale and used for multiple purposes: you will find petrochemicals involved in inks, dyes, packaging, paints and cleaning agents to name a few. Types of jobs to be found in chemicals and petrochemicals may include chemical engineers, site engineers, petrochemical technicians, machine operators, project managers, site managers, truck drivers, and an abundance of other roles in similar categories. However, these projects are very large scale, so there are needs for accountants at all levels, lawyers, and a human resources department. Once the chemicals and petrochemicals have been transformed, there is a need for people in logistics to deliver the goods to the buyers, which are likely to be international which also calls for translating opportunities.
Some say petrochemicals are considered one of the top potentials for large scale chemical industries to develop in Myanmar. Myanmar is one of the major natural gas producers in the Asian continent, but has very few (if any) large chemical factories nor multinational enterprises due to lack of investment and technical know how. Now that the country has “opened up” to foreign investment, the chemical and petrochemical industry, like the mining industry) is on the cusp of change. Universities in Myanmar (technical universities in Yangon and Mandalay) do offer chemical engineering courses, which indicates people are preparing for this change. As with many other sectors and industries, qualifications for jobs in the chemicals and petrochemicals industry depend on what you are seeking. To work as any type of engineer involved in the projects (such as research engineer, process engineer, chemical engineer, or production engineer) requires a college education. Most engineering degrees start out with similar foundations, which all require an aptitude for maths and science, and then a specialisation further on. After study is complete a traineeship is undertaken. Engineers tend to be logical thinkers with outstanding problem solving skills. As the chemicals and petrochemicals industry tends to be an international one, a command on the English language is normally required. As it is an international industry, and investment comes mainly from China, there is a demand for translators and interpreters (especially Burmese - English and Burmese - Chinese). These jobs can be quite lucrative as there are communication barriers that need to be broken. Interpreters and translators normally have a formal education, but what is more imperative is fluency in two or more industry relevant languages. In the chemical and petrochemical industry there are also a number of jobs which do not require a formal education, such as machine operators, manual labourers and drivers. For these jobs, of more importance is physical fitness and a tolerance for extreme weather conditions.
