Jobs available in consulting services and professional services in Myanmar are widely varied depending on the industry but the underlying theme is the same: the services of niche professionals are employed in order to analyse, implement and solve problems or issues using their expert knowledge. The job of an IT consultant for example, is to use a their niche skill in the IT function, and then consult on this area. They may consult for either individuals or companies, and use their extensive knowledge to solve the problem or situation. Professional services jobs may be slightly different as you are selling the service (take for example internal auditing companies), but holds the same principles, and have many overlaps. What sort of professional services jobs are there in Myanmar? It depends on the industry, but professional services jobs are normally in larger companies. Take for example the management consultant’s job: they are mostly found in “The Big 4”. However, management and consulting jobs are not always in a corporate capacity. The job of architects, quantity surveyors, graphic designers, and plumbers (to begin with) are also in the consulting and professional services paradigm. All of these services also tend to be on a temporary and project basis. However the duration of the project can vary in time. Anywhere from a few days to multiple years, depending on the task at hand. The job of a consultant whilst well paid can often be highly stressful as it is the their job to identify the problem, formulate the plan and implement it, all the while being accountable. Often there are unforeseen circumstances which arise during the project and may mean that the project takes a longer amount of time, and therefore the consultant must alter the course of action. This not only causes immediate stress, but also may damage the consultant’s reputation: which can be quite damaging if you are considered an expert in the field.
Due to the influx of international companies as well as the growth of existing local ones, there is a great need for both consultants and professional services from a wide array of angles and functions in all industries. At the core, the objective is take the problem or situation, analyse it, implement a solution and effectively solve it. These problems or situations may be from an operations perspective, a staffing perspective, or international standards in an industry perspective (just to start with) which means that jobs in consulting services and professional services in Myanmar are normally in a senior managerial function. To acquire a job in consulting initially requires a tertiary education and under most circumstances a traineeship, and following that is a clear career path. For example, an architect will obtain their degree and then select a traineeship within their chosen niche and will spend their career fine tuning and specialising further. Similarly with people working in a management consultant firm: it is clear career path, all directing towards becoming an expert. Most people with jobs in consulting or professional services have a diverse skill set as there is not only an abundance of knowledge required, but people working in these careers require excellent communication skills Both consulting jobs and professional service jobs have a certain amount of freedom as not only do they have the opportunity for travel (both locally and internationally) but they often tend to be projects which have a set duration, meaning that there is time flexibility.
