Very broadly, jobs in engineering and technical in Myanmar involve building, testing, setting up and maintaining technical and equipment systems across most sectors. Most often the kind of jobs found in the engineering and technical function lay between skilled craft workers and technologists. Such jobs can be found not just in urban centres, but across the land. Some examples of roles that fall in the engineering and technical spectrum are maintenance managers, automotive technicians, field technicians, site engineers, service engineers, and telecommunication technicians (to name just a few). For the most part, engineers in the technical field create, implement and modify new technology, whereas technicians are more aligned to assembling and maintaining the equipment. The technical aspects of engineering can be very hands on, involving trouble shooting, problem solving, field work and maintenance. On a day to day basis the job of one working as an engineering technician can be varied, and may be located either in the office or on the field. They may be making scheduled site visits maintaining equipment, unscheduled site visits for emergencies, or be in the office ensuring inventory is up to date, ordering new parts, or documenting and reporting site visits made. Working in engineering and technical jobs requires a combination of technical know how and communication skills as there is a large amount of interaction with clients on a regular basis. A certain level of physical fitness is also required as the work may be carried out outdoors and in extreme weather conditions.
Perhaps as a result of being closed off for so many years, Myanmar is perceived to be behind in technological advancements. However, due to the government reforms, especially regarding foreign investment, much of that is changing. Myanmar’s transition to a technology based society seems to be happening quite rapidly, meaning that there are an abundance of job opportunities in the engineering and technical functions. The qualifications required to work in engineering and technical jobs is really quite dependant on the type of job one is seeking. For example, to work as an engineer, especially from the design and creation aspect requires not only a relevant degree but an aptitude for problem solving, mathematics and physics. For many other engineering and technical jobs, in some cases a degree is required, however in many cases formal vocational training or on the job training will suffice. Most jobs in this field require a nice balance between being a skilled craft worker and technologist. Perhaps the exception to this is a sales engineer who also requires soft skills such as communication and sales skills. As roles in engineering and technical are predominately carried out outdoors, a certain level pf fitness is required as not only can the weather conditions be sometimes considered extreme, but the environment also. For example, telecom technicians may find themselves working at great heights.
