Manufacturing at the very core is the process of taking raw goods and making consumer products ready for purchase on a large scale. These goods may be almost anything from cars to clothing to food. There are a number of processes involved in manufacturing in order to present the final product, and many people involved in the process. Manufacturing is normally done in a factory and after the goods are completed they are stored in the warehouse until they are ready for shipment. Some companies will have the manufacturing and warehousing in the same site, but in some cases warehouses are a different function and they may store for a number of different companies. Warehouses are not necessarily based in large urban centres such as Yangon, but in industrial areas, or near train stations or at sea ports. The locations of warehouses is always strategic in order to facilitate the logistics and distribution including import and export. On a day to day basis the function of manufacturing and warehouses is to manufacture the goods, store the finished product and then distribute the products to the buyers, whether it be a shop, restaurant or another factory. Jobs in manufacturing and warehousing tend to be quite manual and require a high level of fitness as well as a tolerance for extreme weather conditions as in warehouse work there is much heavy lifting done and much of this is outside. For most roles in manufacturing, an understanding of the machines that one is operating as well as a sense for safety are required. There are also jobs in manufacturing such as quality assurance, administrative functions, and engineering roles, such as electrical engineers as well as maintenance workers. All of these jobs are imperative to manufacturing as if one part fails then the assembly process is interrupted meaning that the output will be affected.
To say that Myanmar has a burgeoning manufacturing and warehouse industry would be quite the understatement. Not only have consumers achieved a higher disposable income in recent times, but the allowance of foreign investment has meant that many companies have set up as manufacturing factories of various kinds in order to be able to distribute their goods with more efficiency. Added on to this, there are many infrastructure projects underway which have the objective of streamlining logistics. The first one that comes to mind is The Kyaukpyu Port project in the Rakhine state which will create an overland link between Myanmar and Southern China which means that ships can avoid the Strait of Malacca meaning that shipment travelling from China to India will save 5000km travelling distance. Most jobs in manufacturing and warehouses in Myanmar do not require a high level of education. workers just need to be competent as they will receive on the job training. Examples of jobs in manufacturing are production officers, quality assurance, electricians, maintenance, machine operation, shift supervisors, safety officers, and production manager. Some examples of those in warehousing are forklift operators, drivers, distribution officers, and stock controllers. In many of these positions after one has gained experience they may move on to a managerial function. Saying that, there are also a multitude of jobs in manufacturing and warehouses which do not involve operating large machines or heavy lifting. these jobs include HR executives, accountants, planning executives, project managers and those in sales who liaise with the purchasers.
