Procurement sourcing in Myanmar is essentially the process of finding and acquiring goods and services from an external source. Basically it is a buying role which involves sourcing goods (depending on the industry), negotiating with the supplier, prepare contracts covering price, payment, shipment and delivery terms, follow up on the delivery of goods and and ensure that they meet the original requirements in terms of quality and quantity, then deliver invoices to accounting, all the while keeping in mind budget, timeframes, and supply requirements. Even though a purchasing managers role in a manufacturing company will be differ to that of a purchasing manager in a restaurant the fundamentals remain the same. Procurement sourcing works closely with various sections of the company to attend to purchasing needs. On a day to day basis a procurement and sourcing professional will be discovering profitable suppliers and initiating business, negotiating contracts, making purchase requisitions to order materials, goods and supplies, tracking the status of the orders, checking deliveries against orders, collaborating with the finance department and ensuring invoices of approved orders are paid, and undertaking administrative duties to ensure all purchases are reported and data is entered, as well as measuring metrics such as savings and categories sourced. Even though it is a highly administrative role, procurement and sourcing requires a combination of technical and soft skills. It is also the function of procurement and sourcing to build relationships and maintain vendor relationships to ensure best best pricing and order preferences. To be good at this job not only does one need to have the ability to multitask, attention to detail, excellent computer skills, even more excellent communication skills, but an ability to prioritise tasks.
Procurement sourcing in Myanmar is a vital function to any business process, and central to an organisation. There are opportunities in procurement in basically any industry from both a local and international perspective. Being able to identify and source the right products or services for a business requires a unique skill set. To get a job in procurement does not necessarily require a degree, but qualifications in the relevant industry is definitely a bonus. Procurement sourcing can start out as an administrative role, as there is an abundance of metrics to track, bit once a procurement officer has proven themselves they will move into a role with more negotiations and customer interaction. As a career path they may then move onto a supervisory role, or become a procurement manager. Other options for a procurement officer is to move into an operations role within the company. Procurement sourcing requires such a unique skill set, but when this skill set is developed it is easily transferrable to other industries. For example, one may start out as a shop assistant in a clothing store, then move onto dealing with inventory, and from there into a buyers role. Through this they will establish contacts, and from thereby move to another company, or may even go and work in the company of one of their suppliers in a sales capacity. This move may also go the other way. One may be working in a sales role for a food and beverage supplier, and may then choose to make the transition into a buyers role as a strong network will have been developed. As procurement sourcing is also an international role, travel is always possible.
