These days very few people have just one job for all of their working life. With Myanmar opening its doors to foreign investment and welcoming new companies, there are a lot more opportunities to move companies. But what should you consider when choosing a new job?

The chance to earn more money is often given as a reason when people resign. A survey by JobNet of 1260 people working in Myanmar in April 2017, discovered that salary accounted for 42.5% of the dissatisfaction people felt about their current job. Of these, 77% were working for local companies. However, while a larger salary can be an attraction, but make sure it is not the only reason you want to change jobs.

Some of us might even consider changing jobs for a lower salary if there were other factors that held greater appeal. For example, a job that offered training and career development opportunities, might mean a downgrade in salary for a while, but hold great potential for advancement in the future.

A survey by Korn Ferry of 5,000 professional workers in the USA in December 2017, revealed that 33% of people wanted to change jobs because they were stuck in a rut and wanted a new challenge. If this is your reason for changing jobs, make sure you find out exactly what your new opportunity is offering. Beware of falling into the trap of hearing what you want to hear. Prepare some questions in advance of your first job interview so you can evaluate the new opportunity. These can include asking for examples of the types of projects you will be working on, the resources that will be available to you, and some information about the structure of the team you will be joining.

Taking a new job in a new company is similar to joining a new family. If you have a wish-list of companies that you would like to work for, take the time to read their company profiles. Many of Myanmar’s leading employers have detailed company profiles on the JobNet website. Also check out their social media profiles and see what their employees and customers say about them. The way a company talks about their vision and values can reveal a lot about their culture. Job Fairs are also a brilliant opportunity to speak to prospective employers in a more casual setting than a formal job interview. The way a company makes you feel can often be a strong indicator of whether you will feel happy to build your career with them.

If you are thinking of a career move, make sure your own personal profile is up to date and portrays your skills and experience to your best advantage. Employers need as much information as possible to help them decide who to contact for interviews, so don’t hide your potential.
