Jobs in tourism and travel agencies in Myanmar are in increasing abundance. Myanmar is putting its name on the map for a hot destination, and is catching up to its South East Asian counterparts. Jobs in tourism and travel agencies are available, whether it be catering to budget travellers, luxury travellers or anywhere in between. As Myanmar has been closed off for so very long, tourists and travellers need guidance and advice and it is the job of tourism and travel agency professionals to provide this. Jobs in the tourism and travel agency industry, include customer facing roles such as tour guides and drivers as well as office roles. It is a long process from attracting clients to actually having them on a tour, and in a travel agency there will be people in a call centre providing customer service, marketing professionals, and sales staff. There are also administrative roles which ensure that all the date is input, and all the logistics are organised. Whilst the roles seem to be varied, they have one thing in common. It is the job of those in tourism and travel agencies to be knowledgeable, and as they are dealing with international guests a command of the English language is always an asset.
In 2013, the “Tourism Master Plan” was created, with the target of having 7.5 million arrivals by 2020, and it seems by the way that things are going that this may be achievable. Opportunities exist all over the country, but especially in Bagan, Mandalay, Yangon and Inle Lake as this is where most tourists tend to visit. Obtaining a job in tourism and travel agencies really depend on what it is you want to do. For example to become a driver, a licence as well as a clean driving record and regard for safety is required. To become a tour operator, computer skills are needed as well as a command on the English language. Administrative roles are also possible without a degree. Attributes that are required for all of these roles are communication skills, a friendly demeanour, attention to detail and a command on the English Language. Jobs in tourism and travel agencies are rife throughout Myanmar, and those who provide unique and authentic experiences go far!
