Retailing refers to the business activity of selling goods or services to the final consumer. Whether it be a supermarket, a specialised shop, an electronics store, or a car showroom (amongst many others) there are a multitude of jobs in the retail available. At the forefront of jobs in retail are those of the sales personnel as they are the ones at the final end of the chain. Whether it be selling a car or a pair of jeans, it is the job of the salesperson to sell the product. There are a number of other jobs in retail at the store level, such as shift supervisor, manager and so forth. Basically the job of retailers is to serve as a buying agent for the consumers, and to provide a convenience. It is also the job of in store staff and retailers to conduct promotional activities to “move” the goods from the shelves. The job of wholesale on the other hand is to act between the manufacturer and the retailer. Wholesaling jobs are activities involved in selling goods to those who intend to resell. Wholesalers are normally localised and provide transportation of the goods. Wholesalers will buy goods in large quantities form the manufacturers with the purpose of selling them in smaller quantities to retailers. As an example, let’s take a a beer manufacturer. They will manufacture the beer, and then wholesalers will buy large quantities of the beer and from there take care of the distribution to bars and shops in the localised area. As they are buying in bulk, they will get a better price, and then charge the retailers slightly more, and then the retailers will charge the individual customers more than that. It is a symbiotic system with a flow.
It seems that Myanmar has recently become a little more receptive to international trade, which has opened the doors for international brands to start competing for the newly acquired disposable income of individuals. This means that there is an abundance of jobs in retail and wholesale in Myanmar. In a retail capacity, there are jobs not only for this in the “shop” but also for those managing behind the scenes, for example an accountant doing the paperwork. In bigger shops or chains there will normally be a human resources department, a marketing department and a sales department all involved in the retail process. The entry level jobs to not normally require a degree but for the corporate professionals one is normally required. However, one of the advantages of working in a large chain is that the hours tend to be flexible which frees up time for further study. Jobs in wholesale have a similar dynamic, but the customer are not individuals but retail businesses. There is a lot more logistics involved in wholesale as not only do they buy the goods, but also distribute them. Not only are there warehouse workers and sales representatives, but a large team is required to monitor the cash flow. There are administrative roles such as data entry and customer service, but there is also likely to be one or two people specialise in accounts receivable as a warehouse will be dealing with a multitude of retailers and more often than not will not receive the cash up front for goods.
