As of 2016, Myanmar’s agriculture industry accounts for 38% of GDP and 65% of the labour force. Whilst the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries show a lot of promise (Myanmar has fertile soil, many different resources and 3000km of coastline, not to mention freshwater fishing) the potential of the agriculture sector has not yet been realised. The types of jobs in agriculture to be found are mainly in NGO’s. social enterprises and non-profit organisations. In July 2016, the NLD announced an economic plan targeted at developing a market oriented economy. Available jobs and careers in the agriculture sector revolve around strengthening farming production, enhancing food security, increasing exports and improving living standards as well as educating farmers on modern day farming methods. Kinds of jobs in agriculture to be found include project management, sustainability project workers, capacity building professionals, warehouse and logistics employees, marketing professionals, fundraising, PR managers (typically large businesses operating in the agricultural sector can have internal marketing departments) and production workers to name a few. Duties can be wide and varied, but as an example, an enterprise and livelihood development manager on a day to day basis may be responsible for conservation strategies (planning and implementing agriculture based livelihood strategies), technical support, working with local communities or other stakeholders such as partnering NGO’s, business service providers, fundraising, monitoring market trends, conducting research, reporting progress and so forth. To work in such a career, one needs excellent communication skills, computer skills, problem solving initiative, and English language skills to name a few. Related to the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors are infrastructure projects (for example on roads) which will hopefully streamline the export process in order to increase productivity and efficiency for farmers, meaning that their income will improve and in turn their living standards,
Agriculture, forestry and fishing in Myanmar has amazing potential for economic growth and development in Myanmar. As of 2017, approximately 38% of Myanmar’s GDP came from farming, and 70% of the population live in rural areas. However, even though Myanmar has an abundance of land, 300km of coastline, extensive resources and a proximity to India and China that is beneficial for trade, due to being closed off for so many years techniques and equipment are somewhat outdated. Currently Myanmar farming methods depend on traditional manual labour which affects productivity and output. To move forward, investment is needed in education, agriculture equipment and machinery, fertilisers and crop protection, value added production as well as in the packaging and warehouses. NGO’s, social enterprises and nonprofits have set up projects to help the 2 million small scale farmers in Myanmar. Working at an NGO is a very coveted career, so in order to get a job one requires a relevant college degree, such as one in rural development, business administration, economics, marketing or enterprise management. To work in this field in Myanmar, one also requires in-depth knowledge of government and development in the field of natural resources (for example forestry and agriculture). Working for an NGO one also needs to be very adept in communication, as there are many different stakeholder’s interests to manage. It is also very helpful to have a command on the english language and excellent computer skills. Working as an NGO is highly rewarding as you get to experience different cultures whilst making a difference to people’s lives. Other types of jobs one might find in agriculture, forestry and fishing in Myanmar may include transport, logistics, interpreting or translating. To become an interpreter or translator, one does not necessarily need a college degree, but fluency in two or more languages.
