Management is an essential part to the machinations of any company or organisation at all levels. In essence management oversees not only people but functions in order to reach the goals and objectives of a company or organisation. Whether a manager is managing a small administration team or a general manager overseeing the departmental managers, many of the fundamentals remain the same. They are simultaneously managing up and down. The function of management is to develop goals, create, implement and maintain processes and plans to achieve these goals, select a team help them achieve these goals, and then train the team, monitor their performance, and constantly guide and lead them. Simultaneously a manager will be reporting to their superiors and other stakeholders reporting on progress and achievements. At the same time a manager must be highly knowledgeable on current legislation and law, ensuring that the function they are managing is aligned to local and international standards. Take for example an accounting and finance manager: if there is any numerical inaccuracy in their reporting of the companies finances than it is they who will be held responsible. To function as a manager one must have a special skill set. Regardless of the department, they must have analytical and problem solving skills, leadership qualities, as well as excellent communication skills to enable them to communicate with all stakeholders, both internal and external. Department managers must also work together on a daily basis, for example a HR manager will liaise with finance manager in matters regarding renumeration, performance, accounts and streamlining processes.
Myanmar is experiencing unprecedented economic growth, and there is a high demand for managers across all industries and within that all departments. For example, in Yangon, there are multinational companies setting up operations that are in need for good HR Departments (which are made by good HR Managers). This is not just for the recruitment and retention of staff, but bridges need to be gapped in terms of workplace culture. To become a manager in the first place, a certain level of education is expected, as is a certain number of years of experience (depending on the position). Coupled with this is a proven track record in managing teams as well as meeting goals. Not to mention an excellent command on the English Language for international firms. It is an exciting and dynamic time, with many opportunities. A manager may choose to work their way up through the company to director level, or they may work towards moving up from, for example, an admin manager position to a more specialised HR Manager position. Another option for candidates seeking to advance in their careers, is for managers to move from a small company to a large multination, and maybe in a different location.
