The clothing, garment and textile industry in Myanmar, often referred to the apparel industry is the design, manufacturing, and distribution (import and export) of both clothing and footwear. It is a thriving industry and there are an abundance of jobs in clothing, garment and textiles at a variety of different level. Jobs in the clothing, garment and textile industry do not just involve working for large clothing manufacturers. Myanmar has a very rich culture in textiles, which are unique and individual, there are jobs in textiles throughout the land and each state and division has there own unique patterns An example of small scale jobs in manufacturing is the silk and lotus weaving in Inles Lake, which is very popular with people travelling in Myanmar. Regardless of the size of the operation, there are certain jobs in the clothing, garment and textile industry which are inherent. The sourcing of the materials, the designing of the products, the manufacturing and creation to bring these designs to life, followed by the distribution, and the end game being the sale. Behind all this there are jobs in marketing as the image needs to be created to appeal to the buyer. The clothes will end up in shops, and that is where sales comes in.Due to the uniqueness of the textiles in Myanmar there is also a large need for tailors, especially for foreigners as they sometimes tend to be larger than the locals. Another large aspect of jobs in the clothing, garment and textile industry is the importing of foreign brands. The fashion in Myanmar tends to be trending towards a western way of dress, so manufacturers are setting up factories in order to simplify the logistics, especially some of the larger companies who’s clothing can be defined as FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) and time is imperative.
In March of 2015, the Myanmar Government launched its National Export Strategy (NES) which aim is to have a 5 year plan to improve Myanmar’s export capacity in order to enhance economic development. The garment and textile industry was included in this plan, hopefully meaning the creation of not only many more jobs, but opportunities for education in the related fields. To acquire a job in clothing, garments or textiles is dependant of the type of job one is seeking. To become a designer the most important thing is passion and practice, and then education at a college to hone one’s skills in beneficial. To work on the marketing side of things or for example in the accounting department of a clothing company, formal qualifications are normally required. However to work in the manufacturing area, jobs are available without a need for any formal education. For working a shop, again no experience is required, however a command of the English language is often required as well as being seen as a good representative for the brand. The benefits of working in a shop are that the hours can be flexible, which allows time for to follow other interests such as study, and a new skill set is acquired.
