The Planning Engineer is responsible for developing, monitoring, and controlling project schedules to ensure timely completion of engineering, construction, or manufacturing projects. The role ensures effective coordination between project teams, contractors, and stakeholders by maintaining accurate planning, progress tracking, and reporting systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Planning & Scheduling
Develop detailed project schedules using tools such as MS Project, Primavera P6, or equivalent
Define project milestones, timelines, and work breakdown structures (WBS)
Establish baseline schedules for engineering, procurement, and construction phases
Update project schedules based on actual progress and changes
2. Progress Monitoring & Control
Track daily, weekly, and monthly project progress against planned schedules
Identify delays, risks, and critical path issues
Recommend corrective actions to ensure project timelines are met
Conduct site visits to verify actual progress against reports
3. Reporting & Documentation
Prepare progress reports, S-curves, and performance dashboards
Present project status updates to Project Manager and senior management
Maintain all planning documents, schedules, and revisions
Prepare delay analysis reports when required
4. Coordination with Project Teams
Work closely with project managers, site engineers, procurement, and contractors
Coordinate with M&E, civil, and structural teams for integrated planning
Ensure alignment of all departments with project timeline requirements
Participate in project coordination meetings
5. Resource Planning
Assist in manpower, equipment, and material planning
Monitor resource allocation and utilization efficiency
Identify shortages or bottlenecks affecting project progress
Support procurement planning for critical project items
6. Risk & Delay Management
Identify potential project risks and schedule impacts
Develop mitigation plans for delays or disruptions
Perform critical path analysis and scenario planning
Support claims, extensions of time (EOT), and delay analysis documentation
7. Cost & Time Integration (Optional Advanced Role)
Coordinate with cost control team for budget vs progress tracking
Support Earned Value Management (EVM) reporting
Align project cost and time performance indicators
8. Continuous Improvement
Improve planning processes, templates, and reporting systems
Introduce best practices for project scheduling and control
Support digital project management systems implementation
