The automative industry in Myanmar, like other industries, is going through a lot of changes which are geared towards creating more jobs. The automotive industry is one of the most revenue generating in the world and there are an abundance of different functions and automative jobs involved. This starts with the design and creation of an automobile (in which those in engineering function play a big part) and goes all the way through to the sales department in the showroom. But there are a multitude of automative jobs in between, spanning an array of different functions. For example, the automotive industry is highly international and many cars are produced in one country and then exported to another. There are many automative jobs in logistics/ transport involved in this. One of the most significant changes in the automotive industry is the is the ban on used automobile imports in January 2017. Did you know that at the end of 2015, 90% of the 540000 passenger cars registered in Myanmar were estimated to be pre-owned cars built in Japan? One of the problems with is that Japan has right-handed drive cars, whereas Myanmar should be left-handed, which can create dangerous situations on the road. The ban has prompted international brands to set up local plants in Myanmar, for example, Suzuki has set up in the Dagon industrial zone in Yangon. This in itself provides automative job opportunities in manufacturing/ warehouse. Other companies are also considering production in Myanmar, such as Ford, which will create further automative industry jobs. When you take this into consideration, coupled with some of the major infrastructure projects set to take place (such as the The Kyaukpyu Port Project in Rakhine State which will create an overland link between Myanmar and Southern China) there will be a creation of jobs in logistics/ distribution.
Myanmar is going through a time of rapid economic change, and trends are indicating an emerging middle class. Throughout the world, automobiles are a sign of class and prestige, which means that there are many international companies vying for the newfound disposable income of the consumers. Job roles are highly variable depending on which aspect an employee is involved in. For example, to gain the attention of the consumers, a good marketing/ media/ creative team is required, for which a degree is required. A degree is also required for this in the engineering related functions such as an engineer autoCAD. However there are jobs available which require fewer qualifications, such as those in manufacturing/ warehouse. Naturally the automotive industry also has administrative roles in all departments. For example, the HR Department not only requires a great HR Manager but also a great HR assistant. To get a job in the sales department in a showroom as a sales manager, experience in the automotive industry is not always a necessity, but more a proven track record in the fast paced environment of sales. There are also roles which require fewer qualifications, such as those in manufacturing and warehouse, but one skill that is advantageous across all jobs and functions is a command of the English Language as it is an international industry.
