In Myanmar, administrative functions are relevant in every office, company, organisation or corporation on every level. Administration is the universal process of organising people and resources efficiently in order to direct activities to company goals and objectives.
An admin assistant in an office may be responsible for photocopying, filing, data entry, sorting and distribution of mail, and answering phones. Whereas a HR admin assistant will have duties such as screening candidates, processing payroll, verifying and entering employee details into the system, and filing confidential correspondence. These are all administrative functions.
On an admin manager level there will also be development of processes to streamline the administrative processes, for cost effective efficiency purposes. In any administrative function attention to detail as well as accuracy is imperative.
A company or organisation will not necessarily have an administration department, rather each department will have administrative functions within. Even up to the level of director who’s administrative duties, whilst not filing, will be managing the business operations and making decisions regarding administrative processes.
The economic growth that Myanmar is experiencing is unprecedented, and as businesses grow, effective administrative processes are imperative. Like customer service support, entry level administration does not necessarily require formal qualifications. A diploma in business administration is always useful, computer skills (especially in MS Office) are definitely a requirement, and a command on the English Language is expected.
Administration is a perfect way to “get your foot in the door” and gain exposure to business functions and processes. If formal qualifications have been attained, then starting in an administration role relevant to your education is a good starting point. For example, if your intended career path is to be an operations manager in accounting and finance, working in the accounting department in an administrative function provides an abundance of exposure.
Not only this, but working in an administrative capacity involves a lot of communication with other departments and people, so if one has proven themselves to be efficient, diligent, and personable many opportunities may arise.
There is definitely no shortage of roles in administration, and as businesses in Myanmar continue to expand there is only going to be more opportunities.
